Perspective - prison cell
This project was a cooperation with the German state of Thuringia.
We were asked to design the interior of a new kind of juwenile prison,
to be built in 2013.
One of the main aspects of this new concept is that the inmates would later
produce their own furniture.
My team decided to attend to the nine squaremeter prison cells.Regulations were strict. The inmates must not be able to use any piece of the interior as a weapon, barricade or hiding spot for contraband.
The second main aspect of the prison concept is putting the focus on social
reintegration, rather than punishment.Keeping this in mind, we created a secure interior that is easy to clean and clearly arranged while remaining optically lightweight.
The wood-coloured box contains the inmates’ personal belongings
and is considered his possession. It will accompany the prisenor when he is moved to another cell. This feature is supposed to communicate a certain feeling of privacy.
